Prof David Stephenson
David Stephenson is Professor of Materials Processing and Head of Manufacturing Technology at Cranfield University. He is also Director of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre. He joined Cranfield in 1979 from Johnson Matthey Research Centre where he was a project leader specialising in precious metal catalysts. He was appointed to a Titular Chair in 1996. He was Dean of Engineering, Science and Manufacturing between 2002 and 2005. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and also a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He is a member of CIRP and also the International Committee for Abrasive Technology (ICAT)
His research interests include abrasive machining processes, precision machining and process modelling. Recent research has focused on high efficiency deep grinding and thermal modelling, process monitoring and adaptive control and electrolytic in-process dressing to achieve optical quality surfaces on metals, ceramics and glasses.
He is also on the Editorial Board of the IMechE Journal of Engineering Manufacture Part B and the International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology
