Prof Stuart Hampshire
Professor Stuart Hampshire is Professor of Materials Science and Director of the Materials Ireland Research Centre at the University of Limerick in Ireland. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland, a member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, a Member of the World Academy of Ceramics and a member of the American Ceramic Society.
Professor Hampshire was a Technical Officer (Research) with the Dyson Group R&D Centre, Sheffield, UK (1972-74). Following his PhD studies with Professor K.H. Jack, F.R.S., O.B.E. at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (1975-77), he became a Post Doctoral Research Associate at Newcastle (1978-80) before taking up a Lectureship at the University of Limerick in Ireland. At Limerick, he has been Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, Dean of Research and Associate Vice President – Research and Graduate Studies, achieving a full chair in 1996. Professor Hampshire was also a Guest Scientist, Government Industrial Research Institute, Nagoya, Japan (1989) and Visiting Professor at the University of Rennes, France (1996 and 1997).
Professor Hampshire’s research interests include fabrication, characterisation and properties of silicon nitride-based ceramics and oxynitride glasses and glass-ceramics. He also has experience of ceramic nanocomposites and porous ceramics. He has a distinguished record of research publications including: 9 edited conference proceedings, 3 commissioned chapters in reference texts, contribution to a Dictionary of Materials and Manufacturing, online Encyclopedia article, 5 patent applications (2 full patents), more than 150 published papers in international refereed journals and 60 in conference proceedings, many from collaborative work with colleagues in Europe and Worldwide, and 40 invited presentations at International meetings and conferences.
