Introduction

Light & Build exhibition is a biannual global trade fair for lighting and intelligent buildings. In 2012 Abacus introduced its new lighting solution, the Quantum Luminaire, at Light & Build exhibition held in Frankfurt. For that purpose, Ogle Models & Prototypes helped Abacus to exhibit the highest quality working model of the Quantum luminaire at the Abacus Lighting stand (Figure 1).

Abacus’ Quantum Concept

Abacus developed the Quantum concept in collaboration with 3form Design around the Abacus remit through responsible and intelligent use of power. Quantum Luminaire is a highly complex and technologically advanced lighting solution from Abacus in terms of design and production. Abacus designed this ergonomically attractive, highly effective product for illumination of large areas.

Ogle’s Role in Working Model Development

Abacus commissioned 3form Design to develop a fully functional model of the Quantum Luminaire for display at the 2012 Light & Build exhibition. 3form Design had already worked with Ogle and therefore knew exactly how to approach the Quantum project. 3form Design’s Senior Partner, Austen Miller informed that the company’s obvious choice was Ogle considering the requirement for a high quality working model in a tight deadline. Abacus required a very highly detailed, fully functional model to draw attention at the Frankfurt show.

Working closely with Abacus and 3form Design, Ogle compressed the number of components for the model using sophisticated additive manufacturing technologies to create intricate components of the model as a single piece instead of multiple pieces for final production. Ogle is always unbiased in terms of the processes being offered by it and will recommend only the best solution for the application at hand.

Ogle hand finished all individual components as per the specifications demanded by Abacus. All these components were then assembled into a whole unit for testing. With the consent of Abacus’ Lighting Design Manager, John Telford, the unit was carefully transferred into an export crate ready for shipping.

Conclusion

John very much appreciated Ogle’s know-how and approach to model making. 3form Design recommended Ogle and Abacus’ experience with Ogle on the Quantum Luminaire model completely justified the recommendation. Ogle exceeded the expectations by delivering quality consistently.
