Introduction

Atlas Remote Capability Integrated Mission Suite

ARCIMS is one of the most advanced technologies developed by ATLAS ELEKTRONIK to counter the hazards from naval mines. The boat has the ability to detect and detonate underwater mines and thus protects the person from the dangerous minefield. This system utilizes an 11m autonomous boat which is remotely controlled and can be launched and operated from a ship or from the shore.

Until date, AEUK has supplied two ARCIMS variants to the naval service. The first variant is an unmanned minesweeping solution that produces signals into the water so as to detonate mines in a controlled way. A Foreign Navy has accepted two systems for its operation. The second one, called the Royal Navy Motor Boat (RNMB) Hazard, integrates an automatic launch and recovery system for a variety of underwater vehicles and is now being operated by the RN Maritime Autonomous Systems Trials Team (MASTT) (Figure 2).

Scale Models of ARCIMS Boat

ATLAS ELEKTRONIK UK required two precise scale models of the ARCIMS unmanned boat: a model measuring 40cm in length and placed on a presentation base, and a model measuring 1m in length which would be used as a showcase model at exhibitions. The larger model would need to include three unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and a Launch and Recovery system.

Ogle Models and Prototypes first used the CAD drawings for the full-sized boat and resized the drawings to produce detailed and precise plans for both the models. The same procedures were employed to produce the two models. The cabin sections were produced from SLA printed components and the hulls were CNC machined from a model board. For windows, machined acrylic glazing panels with frames were used that were later fixed into place. By means of SLA, the engines, main mast, and interior details were formed again (Figures 3 and 4).

The UUV mounting rig on the larger model was manually made from aluminium and Perspex. The towed arrays were rotated on a machine lathe from a hard resin bar and included extra details such as stabilizers, towing eyes and propellers. Finally, both models were completed as per the high standards of Ogle Models and Prototypes.

The fine detailing on the models extended to deck furniture like handrails, cleats, screens, seats as well as the steering wheel within the cabin. The task was completed over a matter of three weeks. The smaller model was placed on a transparent base and both logos and text were laser-engraved onto this clear base. Since Ogle Models and Prototypes does not have the equipment or know-how to perform the laser engraving process in-house, it outsourced the work to L Squared Lasers, a laser engraving company located in Shefford in Bedfordshire.
