X-ray Fluorescence Detector Reveals Structural Changes in Lithium-Ion Batteries

A team of researchers at DESY's X-ray source PETRA III, has observed structural changes in lithium-ion batteries for the first time. Led by Dr. Ulrike Bösenberg, the researchers performed fluorescence studies, which revealed that the internal structure of the battery material was significantly damaged following just a few charging cycles. The study results will appear in the latest edition of the academic journal Chemistry of Materials.

Researchers Identify Bonding Mechanism of Coherent Interfaces Between Superhard Materials

A research team from the Tohoku University and Advanced Institute for Materials Research in association with Group Leader Takashi Taniguchi at the National Institute for Materials Science and Japan Fine Ceramics Center (JFCC) has identified for the first time the atomic structure and bonding mechanism of coherent interfaces between the hardest and second hardest materials, diamond and cubic boron nitride, respectively.

Brown University Engineers have led a study that has shown that the hair-like appendages of the Venus’ flower basket sea sponge derive their strength from their remarkable internal structure. These tiny appendages, which are made of glass, enable the Venus’ flower basket to anchor itself to the sea floor. This natural internal structure could inspire engineered structures.
