Researchers Use Compressed Sensing to Detect Photovoltaic Cell Defects

National Physical Laboratory (NPL) researchers have designed a new technique for identifying the defective areas in photovoltaic (PV) cells with the help of ‘compressed sensing’, PV cells or solar panels are being widely employed with the increasing demand for sustainable solutions and reducing costs. Effective characterization of PV cells is a critical parameter in the quality control process during the manufacture of these cells.

New X-ray Detector Delivers High-Quality 3D Images in Real Time

Scientists at the Development Center for X-Ray Technology EZRT have designed an advanced X-ray detector called MULIX, which can be incorporated into industrial computed tomography (CT) systems. The X-ray detector is built on the design of medical X-ray machines. Its adjustable curvature improves image quality and at the same time enables excellent flexibility, thus making it possible to adapt the device to different material properties and sizes of test objects.

Stony Brook Researchers Determine Structure of Levitated Molten Uranium Dioxide

Scientists at Stony Brook University have successfully made structure measurements of uranium dioxide (UO2) in molten form. Till now, molecular dynamics and physical property measurement models have existed for molten UO2, but as they had been parameterized from their properties in the solid-state, significant differences were observed in their melt structures. As the structure was not certain, the molten UO2 models showed varying characterizations of physical properties which are critical for the safety of a nuclear reactor.

High-Throughput X-ray Imaging Method Studies Single Biological Particle Structure

A research team from Uppsala University has developed an imaging method to study biological particle structures using X-ray lasers. They used carboxysome – a tiny cellular organelle in photosynthetic bacteria to test the method. The results showed that the technique provides an in-depth knowledge in understanding the structure of smaller organisms through 3D imaging.
