Powder Coating Technolgy Wins PPG R+D Award

Duranar powder coatings by PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) have earned a 2009 R&D 100 Award. The honor recognizes the 100 most technologically significant products introduced in the past year as selected by an independent judging panel and editors of R&D Magazine.

Duranar powder coatings are the result of a unique color-blending and manufacturing process that, for the first time, enables powder coatings to be economically produced in small batches of custom colors tailored precisely to individual customers' specifications. The new process also has the potential to make powder coatings for architectural aluminum "greener" by significantly reducing the material waste and amount of energy used in their manufacture.

PPG and the Duranar powder coatings team - Ron Ambrose, Kristin Bartlett, Dennis Carson (deceased), Tony Chasser, Carol Jackson, Henry Lowman, Steven Sternberger and Howard Wright - will be recognized for their achievement at R&D Magazine's Awards Banquet, Nov. 12. The Duranar powder coatings team was a runner-up for a 2009 PPG Innova Award.

Henry L. Lowman, PPG global director of extrusion coatings, said he is pleased that the prestigious R&D 100 validates the technological breakthrough of Duranar powder coatings. "Because of their performance characteristics, cost and energy savings, Duranar powder coatings have the potential to revolutionize architectural coatings in a way that benefits both the building industry and the environment," he said.
