BASF Coatings, a developer, producer and marketer of a premium range of
innovative automotive refinishes, automotive OEM coatings, industrial coatings
and decorative paints, has planned to divest the RELIUS COATINGS’ decorative
paints business.
The business includes decorative paints, plaster, glazing and coatings for
construction applications. The transaction includes sale of sites in Deurne,
Netherlands and Memmingen, Germany and distribution offices of RELIUS deco
paints. The decorative paints business mainly focuses on Germany and specific
European countries. RELIUS’ industrial coatings business that is operated out of
the Oldenburg site will continue to be a part of BASF Coatings.
BASF acquired RELIUS COATINGS in 2006. Raimar Jahn, President of BASF’s
Coatings division, noted that their market share is too low, mainly in Germany.
Hence, they have planned for this divesture believing that the deco paints
business of RELIUS will expand better in another environment. RELIUS’s
decorative paint business directly sells products to painters and dealers. The
company also distributes deco paints via importers in chosen countries in
Western Europe. RELIUS has approximately 30 distribution offices in France and
Germany. The company manufactures and distributes two brands, RELIUS HOEKA and
RELIUS FLEURIT, from its Deurne, Netherlands site.
RELIUS’ Managing Director, Andreas Fehren stated that the discussion for the
sale of deco paint business has commenced with the works councils.
