Siemens VAI Technologies has developed an electric arc furnace specifically designed for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI). The furnace named Simetal EAF FAST DRI is designed in such a manner that the DRI and the electrical energy input are supplied continuously during the tapping in order to ensure a continuous melting process.

A 150 ton furnace has the ability to increase the overall capacity by 15%. The arc of this furnace has a modular structure which enables retrofitting current traditional furnaces.
The Simetal EAF FASTDRI is equipped with a tiltable lower vessel and an elaborate liquid heel. The furnace, which has been patented, enables a slag free tapping system where taphole refilling and charging are possible under power on conditions. The tap-to-tap times can be reduced by 15% as compared to traditional furnaces. Consumption of energy is also reduced by 20 kWh per ton and consumption of electrode is reduced by 10%. Productivity is enhanced due to the continuous supply of electrical energy during the flat-bath operation. This process also reduces distortions such as flicker.
Continuous operation of the furnace will also enable precise implementation of foaming slag control and oxygen injection. The thermal stress on the refractory and the materials of the structure is constant thus ensuring longer life. The furnace is designed in such a manner that hot DRI at temperatures of 600°C can also be fed to it.
