Styron, a supplier of innovative materials and technologies for the automotive industry, announced that its PULSE GX50 engineering resin has successfully achieved the first commercial application in the Audi’s new model, the Audi Q3.

PULSE GX50 is a highly cost-effective solution, which is a blend of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). The material provides excellent resistance to heat distortion and high impact strength even at low temperatures. In addition, it has very low odor and carbon emission. PULSE GX50 is ideal for automakers like Audi to design a wide range of high quality interior components, including trunk trims, vents, glove boxes, lower instrument panels and mid consoles.
Marjolein Groeneweg, Styron Automotive’s Marketing Manager, stated that automotive manufacturers are constantly looking for solutions to use cheaper and lighter plastic materials and to meet the high safety and ecological standards. Styron’s PULSE GX50 resin is an ideal solution to meet these needs, remarked Groeneweg.
Styron Automotive has worked with Audi to offer a product that will meet their requirements and their target cost. An interior part made from PULSE GX50 plastics is about 7% cheaper and 3% lighter, when compared to the same part manufactured using PULSE A35-105. Thus, the economical solution from Styron allows car manufacturers to meet the industry’s demand for robust, durable and lightweight materials without any compromise in cost, performance and quality. Styron Automotive has been able to meet Audi’s color requirements with support from the Styron Color Group. Two specific colors, soul and truffle beige, has been designed for the OEM.
