Chomarat Group to Expand Range of Coated Fabrics with a Flexible Thermoplastic

The engineered textile specialist Chomarat Group is expanding its range of coated fabrics with a new reinforcement impregnated with a flexible thermoplastic, which will be launched at the Techtextil trade fair on 11-13 June 2013 (Stand B98).

Oflex™ Design is a coated composite reinforcement that offers new design possibilities and high performance for the baggage, luxury accessory and telephone industries, among others.

High-performance fibres and new design possibilities

“Oflex™ Design is the result of synergy between textile expertise for composites and coating technology skills.

Chomarat is one of the only market players with a command of both technologies, and this dual expertise is what makes it possible to obtain very strong fabrics with great design potential,” says Philippe Chomarat, manager of Chomarat’s Plastics business line.

Oflex™ Design consists of a glass, aramid or carbon fabric or multiaxial impregnated with a flexible, translucent thermoplastic matrix. The concept enables a broad range of combinations between a weave (plain, twill, satin, multiaxial) and a material (glass, aramid, carbon or hybrid). “Oflex Design™ makes it possible to offer our customers a unique, customized engineered textile, with a matchless weight/mechanical properties ratio compared to traditional concepts, thanks to the use of high-performance fibres,” says Philippe Chomarat.

A new thermoplastic reinforcement for the building & construction industry

At the trade fair, Chomarat’s stand will also feature TPreg R, an alkaline-resistant, lightweight thermoplastic reinforcement for the building industry.

TPreg R can be used effectively to replace the wood or metal used in building formwork or scaffolding panels. Chomarat has been creating and innovating since 1898 and is now an international textile group.

It has facilities on four continents and relies on a global organization with three strategic business units: Composites, Textiles, and Fashion.

Chomarat has earned two JEC Innovation Awards, one in TM Boston for its C-PLY carbon innovation and one in Paris as a partner in the thermoplastics category.

  • Sales worth €146 M in 2012 and 1,500 employees
  • Facilities in Europe, around the Mediterranean Basin, in the United States and in Asia
  • Business sectors: transportation, marine, building & construction, energy, protection, civil engineering, sports, luxury goods and fashion As an independent family-run company, Chomarat has developed a lot of expertise that relies on strong skills and a command of complex technologies.
