Questek's Chief Science Officer Elected to Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences

Dr. Gregory P. Olson, Sc.D., QuesTek Innovation LLC’s Chief Science Officer and company co-founder, was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences as a foreign associate at their General Meeting on March 20, 2013, and honored at their Annual Meeting on October 25, 2013.

Dr. Olson is a Walter P. Murphy Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University, where he teaches, leads an active group researching computational materials design, and directs the Materials Technology Laboratory/Steel Research Group.

Formed in 1919, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Services (IVA) is the world’s oldest academy of engineering sciences. It promotes the international and interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge across industry, academia, public administration, and various interest groups, with the goal of generating new ideas and knowledge.

In an effort to encourage international interaction and forge closer ties with the EU Commission, IVA establishes a network of distinguished engineers and economists from a wide range of backgrounds and rewards achievement.

The individuals that comprise this expert network serve as qualified advisors to the EU commission, while also partaking in projects and studies that convey the potential of technology in solving societal and economic problems.

Dr. Olson has already served on an advisory board for KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm regarding the future of their materials research platform, and expects to continue providing his expertise on similar IVA advisory committees for materials-related solutions.

The IVA Annual Meeting is a gathering of the Academy’s Executive Committee, during which the previous year’s activities and progress in research and technology in Sweden are reflected upon and individuals are recognized for their success.

Preceding the meeting, Dr. Olson gave the keynote speech at IVA’s Science and Society Forum session “Future Materials – Impact on Society.” As a pioneer in the field of computational materials design, Dr. Olson provided technical and philosophical insight into the development and future landscape of this field in his presentation, “The Future of Materials Creation."

The Annual Meeting culminated with a banquet in Stockholm City Hall, where Dr. Olson and his daughter were received by the Royal Family.

The application of integrated computational, experimental and digital data tools has been identified as a key element of the Materials Genome Initiative, part of the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership announced by U.S. President Obama on June 24, 2011.
