Boyd Coatings Provides Fully-Validated, Zero PFOA PTFE Coatings for Medical Applications

Following a proactive effort to reformulate its PTFE for the new Zero PFOA federal mandate, Boyd Coatings Research Co., Inc. announces that it offers a fully-validated, Zero PFOA PTFE coating and application process for use on medical guidewires and devices which has as good as or better performance characteristics as legacy (low PFOA) material.

With 49 years experience in coating medical products, the company has been a leader in meeting EPA guidelines since 2006 and has a history of supporting its customers through the EPA’s stepped transitions. Development of its Zero PFOA PTFE at the beginning of 2012 allowed Boyd Coatings to bring to market a fully developed material in early 2013. “We have always been proactive in our product development,” explains Don Garcia, Director, Research & Development at Boyd Coatings. “We began transitioning our medical customers early in 2013 so we could be sure that their products weren’t impacted by the formulation change. New customer products were qualified immediately while existing customer products began their requalification procedures at that time. The result is that our Zero PFOA PTFE coatings have been successful in the field now for more than nine month. Recently, the medical community expressed concern about adhesion issues of Zero PFOA PTFE. Even though Boyd Coatings had not experienced any problems with adhesion, the company, again pro-actively, conducted additional rigorous tests of its materials and, as expected, these more severe tests confirmed proper adhesion with Boyd’s Zero PFOA PTFE formulation.”

Boyd Coatings Research Co., Inc. manufactures and applies custom-developed, high performance coatings, specializing in the medical, industrial and aerospace markets. The company is ISO 9001 registered and a licensed applicator of Teflon®, Whitford, 3M and other popular coatings providing non-stick, heat resistant, conductive, insulative, hydrophobic and other desirable properties. Lean and flexible manufacturing capabilities allow the company to process both high-volume and small quantities quickly and cost-effectively.
