REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

The value of worldwide shipments of electronic display materials reached nearly $76.6 billion in 2012. This market is expected to grow to $80.2 billion in 2013 and .9 billion in 2018 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.4% over the five-year period from 2013 to 2018.

This report provides:

  • An overview of the global market for advanced materials used in electronic displays.
  • Analyses of global market trends, with data from 2012, estimates for 2013, and projections of compound annual growth rates (CAGRs) through 2018.
  • Comparisons of materials based on cost, efficiency, performance, and other metrics
  • Examination of changing material requirements and the potential for new materials to enter the market
  • Comprehensive profiles of leading companies in the industry.

INTRODUCTION

This report is an update of an earlier (2005) BCC Research report, whose goal is to determine the current status of the worldwide electronic display materials market and assess its growth over a five-year period from 2013 through 2018. The market has changed greatly since the last edition of this report was published, when cathode ray tube (CRT) technology still had an important position in the market and CRT's main competitors were rear projection (including digital light processing), liquid crystal diode (LCD) and plasma flat panel displays. Today, CRT and rear projection displays have largely disappeared from the market and plasma's star appears to be fading. Today, LCD displays dominate the market, but face growing competition from organic light emitting diode (OLED) and other new technologies, including flexible and transparent displays.

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The overall goal of this report is to provide the reader with an understanding of the changing display market and the ways in which it influences the consumption of the different materials used to fabricate displays. Specific objectives of the report include segmenting and quantifying the display material market in 2012 and analyzing its potential growth in the years through 2018. Additional objectives include discussing recent technological developments and patent trends, and analyzing the economic, political and legal/regulatory environment within which the display industry will evolve over the next five years.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

This report should be of interest to glass manufacturers, phosphor suppliers, chemical companies, optical materials and equipment manufacturers, suppliers of coatings, deposition equipment manufacturers, manufacturers of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) products, nanotechnology companies distributors of various materials and equipment. It should also interest suppliers of electronic industry materials.

SCOPE AND FORMAT

The scope of this report encompasses the key materials used in the major types of electronic displays. BCC Research analyzes the various classes of materials technologies, identifies the major players, determines the current status of each, examines their impact on future display markets, and presents forecasts of growth over the next five years. Technological issues, including the latest trends, are discussed. Other pertinent factors are reviewed, such as material processing and distribution, the need for special materials and the expanded use of certain displays. The report analyzes the materials industry on a worldwide basis, both from a manufacturing and consumption point of view. It examines government and industry support for materials research and the display organizations in major regions of the world. Materials used for different display types are compared by application, property and value.

INFORMATION SOURCES AND METHODOLOGY

Both primary and secondary research methodologies were used in preparing this study. BCC Research surveyed approximately 125 companies to obtain data for this study, including manufacturers of glass, liquid crystals, phosphors, optical filters and polarizers, light emitting diodes, chemicals and polymers, various coatings, MEMS components, nanocoatings and carbon nanotubes. BCC Research also spoke with display manufacturers and display users in a variety of industries, and compiled data from current financial/trade information and government sources. The base year for analysis and projection is 2012. With 2012 data (actual or estimated) as a baseline, market projections were developed for 2013 to 2018. These projections are based on a combination of a consensus among the primary contacts combined with BCC Research's understanding of the key market drivers and their impact from a historical and analytical perspective. The methodologies and assumptions used to develop the market projections in this report are discussed in the detailed market estimates and projections for each segment. The report carefully documents data sources and assumptions. This way, readers can see how the market estimates were developed and, if they so desire, test the impact on the final numbers of changing assumptions such as price.
