New Coating Technology to Enhance Efficiency of Wind Turbine Blades

The blades of wind turbines in offshore environments are susceptible to erosion due to heavy rainfalls and the harmful offshore environment. This leads to a drastic reduction in the energy production capacity and efficiency of turbines. The European project Windtrust is evaluating new technologies to overcome such drawbacks.

As part of the project, a novel coating system has been developed by a group of Danish researchers. It has been demonstrated that the application of the new coating system considerably improves the performance of offshore wind turbine blades by lowering the downtime and maintenance costs.

Offshore wind turbines are increasingly becoming a very important source of renewable power generation. It is evident from the fact of world record wind power production by Denmark in 2015, for the second consecutive year, representing 42% of its total electricity generation.
