Holger Brecht, Application Consultant at FRITSCH GMBH, talks to AZoM about their new Disk Mill PULVERISETTE 13 premium line and the benefits it can bring to the industry.
What are the key application areas for the Disk Mill PULVERISETTE 13 premium line?
The Disk Mill PULVERISETTE 13 premium line is ideal for milling brittle hard and medium hard materials like clinker, coal, limestone or glass as well for pre-crushing of hard, very hard and brittle sample. The key application areas for the PULVERISETTE 13 premium line are the mining and quarry industry, geology, soil and mineralogy industry, ceramics and glass industry, medical and dental engineering, and also the silicon industry.

Could you briefly explain how a disk mill works?
In the Disk Mill, the material to be ground is comminuted by a pressure and shearing action between two counteracting grinding disks with coarse interlocking teeth. The ground material automatically falls down through the pre-set grinding gap into the collection drawer. The desired final fineness can be defined for reproducibility by simply adjusting the digital setting of the gap width.

Why is it important for the industry to adopt this method?
The technology of the Disk Mill PULVERISETTE 13 premium line is extremely important for the industry because even larger quantities – not only in the laboratory scale – can be ground achieving reproducible grinding results.
The main premium advantages are:
- Easy, motor-driven grinding gap adjustment with digital gap display
- Automatic locking of the grinding chamber
- Easy operation and cleaning with Clean Design
- High throughput of up to 150 kg/h with extra powerful motor
- Fine grinding down to 0.05 mm

What advantages does the motor-driven grinding gap adjustment offer the user?
The motor-driven grinding gap adjustment prevents failures by manually gap adjustments by crank through the different operators in the industry. The grinding gap can be conveniently adjusted with accuracy of 50 µm by means of the plus/minus buttons on the digital display. That means that the reproducibility of the grinding method and the results are much more reliable.
How does the Disk Mill PULVERISETTE 13 premium line allow the end user to generate reliable and reproducible results?
In comparison to conventional disk mills, where gap setting between the counteracting grinding disks must be done manually by crank and the grinding time can’t be set automatically, the PULVERISETTE 13 premium line has an innovative motor controller which enables an unique, incredibly easy and reproducible adjustment of the distance between the counteracting grinding disks. In addition, the grinding time can be set with a high level of accuracy to the second via the digital display. The most recent setting is saved and can be accessed directly for the next grinding. This guarantees reliable and reproducible results.

How does this save your customers time?
With the PULVERISETTE 13 premium line the customer can really save time, because this premium Disk Mill is easy to operate, fast and efficient. The user needs only to press the button to lock the grinding chamber, use the plus/minus buttons on the digital display to set the grinding gap and grinding time, fill in the sample into the easy-to-close funnel and start the grinding process. Furthermore, a fast, residue-free cleaning is guaranteed due to clean design with smooth grinding chamber inner surfaces and additional labyrinth sealing of the grinding chamber. This saves time and is an effective protection against contamination.
With conventional disk mills, the customer has to do the following steps manually:
- Lock of the grinding chamber
- Gap setting via a crank
- Gap width check from the outside

How does the plastic funnel ensure optimal material feeding?
The plastic funnel ensures optimal material feeding due to its smooth inner surfaces and flow-optimised transition areas. This also ensures optimal cleaning.
How can users prolong the service life of the grinding disks of the Disk Mill PULVERISETTE 13 premium line?
By simply changing the rotational direction (clockwise/anti-clockwise) of the grinding disks to optimally compensate the abrasion behaviour. This can easily be done via the digital display.
What are the key difference between the Disk Mill PULVERISETTE 13 premium line and other disk mills on the market?
The difference to other disk mills is their unique design in combination with innovative technical details. Especially the easy use in combination with safety aspects, cleaning and grinding performance makes it indispensable for handling fine grinding of hard–brittle to medium-hard solids.
The main advantages are:
- Easy gap and grinding time adjustment via digital display
- Automatic locking of the grinding chamber
- Easy operation and quick, residue-free cleaning
- Final fineness 0.05 – 12 mm
