Marcel Hopfe, sales manager at FRITSCH Milling and Sizing, talks to AZoM about their new Variable Speed Rotor Mill PULVERISETTE 14 premium line and why it is the ideal fast pre- and fine-grinding tool for soft to medium-hard, brittle, fibrous and temperature-sensitive materials.
What are the key application areas for the PULVERISETTE 14 premium line?
The FRITSCH Variable Rotor Speed Mill PULVERISETTE 14 premium line is ideal for the sample preparation of soft to medium-hard, brittle as well as fibrous materials, e. g. herbage, salt, polymers, corn, coffee, rubber, and pills. A possible throughput of a few grams up to around 15 l/h makes the PULVERISETTE 14 premium line suitable for quality control and research areas. Due to the newly developed and improved cooling system, it is also suitable for milling temperature-sensitive samples. According to RoHS, accessories for heavy-metal- and iron-free grinding made of pure titanium are available. Target customers for the PULVERISETTE 14 premium line are located in the food and pharmaceutical industries as well as in polymer and environmental industries.

How does this new system work?
The PULVERISETTE 14 premium line combines two instruments in one. The first is the further developed and improved Variable Speed Rotor Mill PULVERISETTE 14 classic line. The second is a small Cutting Mill with no real equivalent but most comparable to the Universal Cutting Mill PULVERISETTE 19. Each milling principle can be achieved through a quick and easy accessory change.

Configured as a Variable Speed Rotor Mill, a rotor with moulded-on ribs spins at high speed and grinds the sample through collision forces. The sharp-edged teeth, together with the inserted sieve, also cut the sample through shearing. In the last grinding stage, the sample is subject to friction between the rotor and sieve.
The configuration as a Cutting Mill is recommended for soft, non-brittle materials. The rotor has three knives. The counter knives are integrated in the trapezoidal or round perforated sieve ring. The material is milled due to cutting and shearing forces between knives and counter knives, comparable to scissors.
Furthermore, the motor-generated air flow cools the grinding chamber resulting in a more gentle grinding process. Due to the rotation speed between 6,000 and 22,000 rpm the dominating fractional force and energy input can be influenced.

Why is it important for the industry to adopt this method?
The daily business in industry and research is more and more determined by documentation and regulations e. g. concerning contamination, reproducibility, certification, and safe working. From the beginning of developing the new PULVERISETTE 14 premium line we focused on these regulations in order to comply with them. The main advantages of the new PULVERISETTE 14 premium line are:
- Fast and reproducible grinding results from small sample volume up to pilot plant scale
- Full automatic grinding process from feeding until collecting when combining the PULVERISETTE 14 premium line, the LABORETTE 24 automatic Vibratory Feeder, and high-performance Cyclone separator made of stainless steel 304. Together these components deliver optimized feeding rate and efficiency.
- Effective temperature control because of newly developed cooling system and temperature monitoring
- High speed stability even under full load
- Designed for easy and effective cleaning to prevent cross-contamination
What advantages does the combination of cutting, impact, and shearing offer the user?
The variety of materials to mill is often very big and the different material properties disallow the usage of only one mill. That is why many instruments for various applications can be found in every lab. The new PULVERISETTE 14 premium line offers the advantage of three different fractional forces – beating, shearing and cutting. With this combination it is possible to grind an unrivalled variety of samples with only one instrument. Depending on the material properties a final fineness below 0.08 mm is reachable.
How does the new cooling system work and what are the advantages?
The strong airflow produced by the motor, an ingenious air routing, as well as special cooling fins on the rotors further intensify cooling effect. Your advantages: melting or sticking of the sample is reduced, even with temperature-sensitive samples, and no dust can creep in the direction of the motor. The cooling function can easily be enhanced further by utilizing the integrated option to connect an exhaust system or a FRITSCH Cyclone separator.

How does this system compare to others on the market?
The newly developed PULVERISETTE 14 premium line with its modular design offers 2 instruments in 1 – Variable Speed Rotor Mill and Cutting Mill. Furthermore, the high-performance cooling system with temperature monitoring for more gentle grinding and higher throughput make the PULVERISETTE 14 premium line a unique and unrivalled instrument on the market place.
How easy is it to clean?
Every single part of the instrument that comes in contact with the sample can easily be taken out of the instrument without any tools and cleaned separately. This avoids cross-contamination on the one hand side and it offers an easy and complete recovering of the sample on the other. All parts can be autoclaved for aseptic work.

What safety features have been included in this system?
Every FRITSCH premium line instrument is made for easier, faster and safer working. The AutoLOCK grinding chamber of the PULVERISETTE 14 premium line ensures a tight, safe closure. All grinding set components are checked automatically by the Intelligence-Safety-Control-System ensuring completeness and correct insertion. Even the new FRITSCH Vibratory Feeder LABORETTE 24 is detected by the program.
How will the PULVERISETTE 14 premium line be developed in the future?
For extending the capabilities of the PULVERISETTE 14 premium line further modules are projected. One of these modules is a pin mill insert and knife insert.
