S2 PUMA with the SMART-QUANT FP for Powerful Standardless Analysis

The two major analytical strategies of modern XRF analysis are conventional calibration and standardless analysis. A standard-based calibration provides the best results for the analysis of known sample materials that demand the highest precision and accuracy. However, nearly all laboratories need to deal with unknown samples sometimes, or with samples that have no reference material available. In such cases, elemental composition can be effectively analyzed using standardless analysis. However, robust standardless software is required to achieve this.

Standardless Analysis

The new SMART-QUANT FP is supplied as a completely integrated component of SPECTRA.ELEMENTS, the instrument software package of the S2 PUMA (Figure 1). It provides reliable elemental data from C to U without any meticulous calibration for solid, powdery, liquid, pressured, or fused material. The SMART-QUANT FP calculates theoretical spectra using the fundamental parameters, based on given instrument parameters and sample and detector response.

The theoretical spectra are then compared with the measured spectra by the SMART-QUANT FP to reduce the variations between them by changing the element concentrations in its model. This iterative process is repeated until the theoretical spectra perfectly match the measured spectra.

All of these actions are performed automatically in the background, without any operator interference. However if operators wish to do so, they can control the process by inputting various parameters to refine the standardless calibration based on the requirements of the application.

Analysis

A measurement can be started in its simplest form by placing the sample in a spectrometer, entering a sample name and pressing the “Start” button (Figure 2). The results can be obtained within a few minutes. It is possible to adjust the measurement parameters for specific user and application requirements in order to match the respective analysis requirements.

Within the “Loader” the operator can choose the sample, name it, and start the measurement on a touchscreen display.

With the SMART-QUANT FP, activities such as sample definition, analysis scheduling, measurement specifications, and result presentation can be customized in a number of ways. Users can order the S2 PUMA with various X-ray tubes, several sample handling options, and a variety of detector options to customize the hardware to meet their specific application requirements.

However, the SMART-QUANT FP is configured in a “one fits all” standard configuration to allow users to initiate measurements instantly, without making any lengthy adjustments. The intuitive user interface directs the user through the process right from positioning the sample all the way through to result handling, whether it is a more sophisticated analysis program or an out-of-the-box standardless application.

Critical results can be read instantly, subsequent to the measurement in the “Loader” tab. The “Results Manager” provides the in-depth analytical data (Figure 3). Each sample is shown in a dedicated window, which allows viewing all analytical data without scrolling, including in-depth analytical data as well as fitted and measured spectra. It is possible to judge the goodness of the fit on a displayed figure of merit “R/R0”.

Industry Applications

The SMART-QUANT FP solution was used to measure typical samples from various industrial applications against standard samples. The results agree well with the reference values, demonstrating the outstanding performance of the SMART-QUANT FP:
