Labs that perform Gas Chromatography (GC) processes are familiar with the problems associated with relying on compressed gas storage or liquid hydrogen tanks for their carrier and fuel gas requirements.
From safety and cost to reliability and efficiency, on-site hydrogen generation is a better option to supply laboratories with the required hydrogen carrier and fuel. While small laboratories can use benchtop generators to meet their requirements for a pure, constant, and safe supply of hydrogen, using several small generators is not an economically viable option for large laboratories that use tens to hundreds of gas chromatographers.
To exploit the benefits of onsite hydrogen generation, large laboratories can install a single, larger Proton OnSite® hydrogen generator. This generator can be plumbed into all labs as a ‘Lab Server’, which has the ability to supply a stream of gas at the flick of a switch, anywhere in the building.
Proton OnSite’s large Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are the only generators that have the potential to run as a Lab Server. A single Proton OnSite S Series hydrogen generator can supply ultra high-purity hydrogen gas up to 200 GC units. The gas can be managed, maintained, and monitored from a single source, ensuring constant flow, pressure and purity throughout the building.
Figure 1. Proton OnSite S Series. With a production rate of 4.8 to 18.8 SLPM, Proton OnSite’s compact Proton® S Series hydrogen generators produce the equivalent of four cylinders of betterthan- UHP grade hydrogen every day.
Benefits of On-Site Hydrogen Generators
Proton OnSite’s hydrogen gas generators can produce hydrogen on demand. This eliminates the safety regulation costs and explosion risks associated with stored hydrogen cylinders.
With an on-site hydrogen generator that can supply gas continuously, there is no need for exchange tanks. A lab can continue working, even when an operator is not present.
The operating costs of on-site hydrogen generators are low.The generators have minimal safety requirements, and need very little maintenance.
The installation of Proton OnSite’s hydrogen gas generators only takes a few hours. The generator needs only electricity and water to supply a whole lab with reliable, pure hydrogen.
