Ensuring Quality in the Food and Beverage Industry with ABB’s PCS100 AVC-40

ABB recently won an order to provide power quality solution for the manufacturing system of a leading dairy company in China. This order marks an important breakthrough for ABB’s power quality business to venture into the Chinese food and beverage industry, which indicates attractive market size and growth potential.

The Problem

Due to growing demand of production continuity and higher automation level in the dairy industry, stable power quality has become a vital lever for the dairy company to improve the efficiency of operation.

A major threat to the sterile environment of the dairy production line is voltage sags. This may lead to a waste of raw milk and the additional labor required to clean production materials like milk containers, causing production interruption that usually takes over four hours to be resumed. Thus, dairy enterprises undergo a huge loss in terms of cost and time. Therefore the company decided to upgrade and transform its production line so as to ensure that important loads are protected from voltage sags with power protection devices.

ABB’s Solution

To overcome this problem, ABB delivered its Active Voltage Conditioner, PCS100 AVC-40, which is a high performance power electronic system specially developed for large-scale and industrial commercial applications. The PCS100 AVC-40 responds immediately to power quality events by rectifying surges, unbalance, phase angle errors and voltage sags while providing continuous voltage regulation. The PCS100 AVC-40 can respond within milliseconds and inject up to 40% correction voltage at the time of voltage sags and swells. The compact design of the active voltage conditioner allows it to be easily integrated into a machine room or other confined spaces, minimizing the need for additional floor space during design and construction.

In addition, the PCS100 AVC-40 is equipped with a redundant internal bypass system that ensures continuous power supply to loads from utility grid.

ABB active voltage regulator PCS100 AVC-40 has typical applications including high-speed bottling, packaging, dairy processing and other food and beverage production lines. For this project, our sales team had followed up and provided guidance for technical solutions at the customer site for about one year. Our relentless execution convinced the customer of ABB’s products and service capability, and they finally chose our solution.

ABB’s power quality products help customers in the food and beverage industry improve their profitability, by enhancing product quality, reducing downtime significantly, avoiding production losses, minimizing wastes and lowering the need for equipment maintenance.

Conclusion

The food and beverage industry across the world has developed rapidly in recent years. The companies involved in the market are speeding up their upgrading and updating to optimize product quality and productivity for higher competitiveness, which paves the way for new business opportunities for ABB. According to a research report published by Deloitte, the market scale of the domestic food and beverage industry, closely related to ABB businesses, will rise from US $1.7 billion in 2013 to over US $4.1 billion by 2020. Segments such as meat processing, beverages and dairy products will be the major contributors to this growth. Hence, ABB Group has considered the food and beverage industry as a priority of Next Level strategy.
