In a factory located in Indonesia, ABB helped to improve productivity and efficiency via the provision of power quality solutions. In under a year, they achieved a return on their investment.

Advanced Power Quality Technologies from ABB

This factory applied two of ABB’s ground-breaking power quality technologies – PCS100 UPS-I (Industrial UPS) and PCS100 AVC (Active Voltage Conditioner) – the configuration of which drastically increased the factory’s productivity and uptime to 99%.

In 2015, this customer of ABB had experienced between 50 and 60 power quality issues which seriously affected its sensitive production process. Issues such as excessive down time, extremely high spare part costs, and production material scrap, led to the accumulation of losses equating to millions of dollars. A conventional UPS double conversion solution was applied, however this was unsuccessful, and results remained significantly below expectations.

PCS100 UPS-I and PCS100 AVC Solutions

A solution was provided by ABB, who connected the PCS100 UPS-I and PCS100 AVC in an innovative serial configuration. This protected the factory’s ‘fill and pack’ process. Power outages or interruptions are prevented by the UPS, and the AVC protects against voltage disturbances ranging from swells, to dips, flickers, phase angle errors, and imbalances.

Since it became operational in January 2017, the company has received complete protection of critical loads through this solution. Both yearly power quality events - reaching as many as 60 each year – and annual cumulative production losses equating to $5 million, have been reduced to zero.

ABB is pleased to support our customer to achieve higher efficiency and productivity at its factory through our revolutionary technology.

Ferdinand Sibarani, Sales Engineer for Electrification Products in Indonesia, ABB.

ABB’s energy-storage-free technology, the PCS100 AVC, is designed to protect against a variety of voltage disturbances in industrial loads. It is one of the most effective and efficient voltage conditioning solutions across the globe, having the benefits of a small footprint, extraordinarily high speed power electric technology, and modular architecture.

ABB Products Protect Against Power Outages

Designed especially to protect against interruption or power outages in industrial loads, the PCS100 UPS-I is a single conversion power electronic device. Its unrivaled flat efficiency exceeds 99%. Less than 2 milliseconds are required for ABB’s innovative technology PCS100 UPS-I to transfer the load across from the normal supply mode, to energy storage supply mode.
