Particle Sizing Methods: The Advantages and Disadvantages

Air Permeability Fisher Method

A fisher sub sieve sizer operates on the method known as the air permeability fisher method. In comparison to other particle sizing methods, the air permeability fisher method has several advantages. These include low cost, simplified sample dispersion, ability to test on magnetic powders or hard alloy, and direct reading of particle size.

However, the main disadvantage with this method is that only the average particle size is available, particle size distribution is unobtainable.

Sieve Analysis

 

Sieve analysis, especially advanced air jet sieve analysis, offers the advantages of fast and easy handling, low instrument cost, as well as accurate and reproducible particle sizing results. In addition, it also enables a shortened analysis time and the capability to separate particle size grades or fractions by meshes. Naturally, the result is that the air jet sieve method has become a widely accepted alternative analysis method that uses laser light or image processing.

Laser Diffraction

Advantages of laser diffraction include easy operation, a broad test range, a high degree of accuracy and repeatability on-line test. Further, there is a possibility of performing a dry test as well.

However, this method’s results are dependent on the distribution pattern. Moreover, this instrument comes at a high cost.

Microscope Imaging

Microscope imaging is a simple, direct test procedure, and allows for shape analysis.

However, it suffers from a few disadvantages. For instance, it consists of a long test cycle, provides relatively poor representation, and does not allow for the testing of ultra-fine particles.

Sedimentation

Sedimentation’s benefits are that it comes at a low price, enables continuous operation, produces a high degree of accuracy and repeatability, and a relatively broad test range. However, sedimentation is associated with a long test cycle.

Coulter

The advantages include easy operation, a shorter testing cycle, and relatively high accuracy. However, coulter’s drawbacks are its narrower size range. Moreover, it also creates easily blocked apertures.

Electron Microscope

Electron microscopes can conduct high resolution measurements of particles of nanometer size. However, there also is the possibility of alternation of particles in the process of sample preparation. Moreover, this microscope only represents a small portion of the overall sample and comes at a high cost.

Ultrasonic

Ultrasonic is a method of direct testing on highly concentrated liquid. Nevertheless, it can only be performed in low resolution.
