Zinc telluride is a binary chemical compound with the chemical formula ZnTe. It has the appearance of ruby-red crystals or grey or brownish-red powder. Its crystal structure is cubic, like that of diamond and sphalerite. It can also be prepared as hexagonal crystals. It can be easily doped and hence it is one of the more common semiconducting materials used in optoelectronics.


Zinc telluride finds applications in the following:

  • Tetrahertz imaging
  • Electro-optic detector
  • Holographic interferometry
  • Laser optical phase conjugation devices.
