Affordable, Professional 3D Printer from Formlabs

The Form 1 works straight at the box not requiring a complicated set-up.

Innovations in 3D printing have seen this technology develop the capacity to produce rocket engines. However, it’s also the case that such expensive largescale 3D printers require sophisticated expertise to construct and operate and will primarily benefit manufacturers rather than the consumer.

Formlabs look to change this, with their small scale, affordable, professional grade 3D printer - the Form 1 – 3D printing technology that could be used at somebody's desk at the office or at home, and can work right out of the box.

Formlabs are a spin off from the MIT Media Lab and have been aiming to develop a low cost, professional quality 3D printer that can allow instant 3D printing.

Using stereolithography, which is common practice for most 3D printing technology in terms of print resolution and finish the Form 1 directs a laser across a tray or liquid resin, which causes a small layer that, solidifies. This process is repeated thousands of times and allows for high-resolution detail.

The Methacrylate Photopolymer clear resin is available from $149.

The resin used in the Form 1 is a methacrylate photopolymer which is both log lasting and easy to remove.

The software is simplified through auto generation of structures and intuitive workflow. There are also options for more advanced 3D printing with multiple manual tools.

Not only does it perform duties to that of professional 3D printers it also has a stylish appearance. Measuring in at 30 x 28 x 45 cm and weighing 18ilbs, the Form 1 would look the part in anyone’s office.

With a price of $3,299.00, you are paying for the professional’s 3D printer without the hassle of having to take the time to set it up – it’s ready to go!
