Creating Nano Powders with the PULVERISETTE 7 premium line
The pharmaceutical industry is involved in producing new medicines with active ingredients in the nano scale. The human body absorbs active ingredients in the nano scale faster than conventional compounds. The better bioavailability helps in minimizing the medicine dosage. Despite smaller amounts of active ingredients, the same therapeutic effects are possible and at the same time, unnecessary side effects are minimized. Nano particles are also needed in the chemical industry as their enlarged specific surface shows totally novel catalytic attributes.
The comminution of aluminium oxide is presented here as a testing system. The d50 value of the base material is 20µm. 5mm zirconium oxide balls and 0.5ml AI2O3 along with water are ground down in 60minutes to around 300nm. To reach the less than 100nm range, it is required to use tinier grinding pearls. Here zirconium oxide pearls with 0.1mm diameter is used. The results obtained after 3h are as follows:

Using the FRITSCH Laser Particle Sizer ANALYSETTE 22 NanoTec, the depicted grain size distribution was determined while considering the corresponding Mie parameters. Certain abrasion on the grinding bodies cannot be prevented with a comminution with a ball mill. This abrasion in the obtained measurements was subtracted from the original. It is possible to achieve comparable results with other hard fibrous metal oxides. In this case the comminution is always in a suspension. It is not possible to have a dry comminution. Nanoparticles have a very large specific surface. Hence the suspension is unstable during comminution end i.e. the particles re-agglomerate very quickly. Special additives must be used for stabilization.
To achieve best grinding results, all grinding bowls and balls are available in different sizes and materials. For grinding in inert gas and for mechanical alloying use the FRITSCH PULVERISETTE 7 gassing lids – quickly and safely.
