The Tinius Olsen Stiffness tester is suitable to determine the stiffness characteristics of a broad range of products and materials. The operating principle is simple; a specimen is clamped at one end and a controlled load is applied at the other end. The distance between the clamp and the point at which the controlled load is applied is called the test span and this is adjustable on Tinius Olsen stiffness testers.
The key features of stiffness testers are:
- The load is steadily applied by a motor drive and a highly precise indication of load and the resulting angle of bend are simultaneously shown on circular scales.
- The load is indicated as 0 to 100% of the range being used and a post is provided so that additional weights can be added to increase the loading capacity. Furthermore, for manual load application, a hand crank is provided.
- It is possible to make apparent bending modulus determinations for plastics in accordance with ASTM D747, using a one or a six (1 or 6) inch-pound (or kilogram-centimeter) capacity machine.
