Medium Voltage

The natural progression of power protection for large critical power facilities is from low voltage (LV) to medium voltage (MV) level. The approach delivers two main advantages. It minimizes costs of the critical power facility build and operation and increases reliability.

Better reliability is derived from the MV design approach with lower switchgear count, larger protected load blocks, and the operating culture of medium voltage systems.

Installing the power protection at the MV level offers the maximum energy efficient configuration as the lower currents at this voltage result in lower losses and smaller cables.

The PCS120 MV UPS is the latest addition to ABB’s medium voltage product series, offering a comprehensive power protection solution for customers.

Impedance (Z) Isolated Static Converter ZISC

ABB’s ZISC is a ground-breaking high performance, uninterruptible power supply architecture, and high efficiency power conditioning. It offers protection from a wide spectrum of utility voltage events and delivers constant clean power.

ZISC architecture is based on an isolating line reactor together with the high performance ABB power converters. This simple approach, supported by advanced control, offers unparalleled performance and reliability, along with class leading efficiency.

Decoupled from the utility via the isolating line reactor, the power converters uninterruptedly condition and filter utility disturbances, such as voltage imbalance and harmonics, without cycling the energy storage. Load related events, such as downstream errors and other dynamic reactive current demands, are handled with ZISCs high overload capability.

The coupling transformer and the isolating line reactor are applied at medium voltage, while the power converters and energy storage are at low voltage, thus streamlining maintenance.

Integrated with a broad range of the latest energy storage ABB’s ZISC offers autonomies from few seconds to numerous minutes.
