Histomount is the classic choice in synthetic mounting media. It provides a permanent seal so that ships can be stored or shipped with confidence.

Histomount has a neutral pH, is UV stabilized, and retains its brilliance and clarity for several years. Its refractive index is matched to that of glass cover slips and slide, reducing chromatic aberration with any light source. It is effective with most clearing agents when used as a liquid cover slip or as a permanent mounting medium for glass cover slips. Each 100 ml bottle includes a dip stick to ensure an optimal amount of Histomount.

Notes of use:

Meltmount is a thermal plastic, which means its viscosity decreases as the temperature increases. It has no sharp melting point. It is capable of “cold flow,” which means the Meltmount, sample, slide, and the cover slip can all move independently of each other given a mix of time, temperature, and lateral pressure or gravity.

Storage of prepared slide:

  • Flat, cover slip on top
  • In the dark,
  • Away from dust and fumes
  • At 60 to 85 °F. Storing or transporting the prepared slide above 85 °F may reverse the mounting as the media is thermally reversible.


Cargille MeltmountTM is available in a convenient form called Quick-Stick. It can be used to quickly make permanent microscope slide mounts. Quick-StickTM can be applied to a slide using a hotplate. The permanent prepared slide is ready once the sample and cover glass are positioned and the slide is cooled. The mounting can be reversed by reheating.

MeltmountTM 1.539

With a refractive index of 1.539 (at 25 °C) and an Abbe V dispersion of 45, this is similar to Canada Balsam, making it ideal for mounting many biological samples but without the long drying time of Canada Balsam.

MeltmountTM for Chrysotile Asbestos

Its refractive index (at 25 °C) of 1.550 and dispersion characteristics make it suitable for mounting chrysotile asbestos.

MeltmountTM 1.582

With a refractive index of 1.582 (at 25 °C) and an Abbe V dispersion of 33, its optical clarity makes it suitable for low visible absorption applications.

MeltmountTM 1.605

A refractive index of 1.605 (at 25 °C) and an Abbe V dispersion of 30 make it suitable for mounting asbestiform Tremolite, Anthophyllite, and Actinolite.

MeltmountTM 1.662

Its refractive index (at 25 °C) of 1.662 and an Abbe V dispersion of 26 make it similar to Aroclor 5442, but is PCB-free.

MeltmountTM 1.680

A refractive index of 1.680 (at 25 °C) and an Abbe V dispersion of 25 make it suitable for mounting amolite and crosidolite asbestos.

MeltmountTM 1.704

Its refractive index (at 25 °C) of 1.704, similar to naphrax, and an Abbe V dispersion of 24.

Mounting Media/Balsam Bottle

Mount-Quick Aqueous, available in a 30 ml bottle, is a water-based mounting media that can be used with lipid sections, immunohistochemical stained sections, and AEC method stains.

Shur/MountTM Liquid Coverglass and Mounting Medium

SHUR/MountTM Aqua-Poly/Mount is designed to place coverslips on slides directly from water. Since it is water based and non-fluorescing, it can be used for immune-fluorescent techniques as it enhances and restains fluorescent stains.

Fluoromount-GTM Mounting Media

It is a water-soluble non-fluorescing mounting media for cover slipping slides after a staining procedure with an aqueous final step. This mounting media has a semi-permanent seal for long-term storage and may be used with cell preparations and tissue sections.

Citifluor Antifadent Solutions

Citifluor is a range of antifadent mounting media that greatly reduces fluorescence fading from FITC, rhodamine, Hoechst, Alexa, Green Fluorescent Protein, cyanine dyes, Texas Red, and phycoerythins. These mountants are available in either glycerol-based or glycerol-free solutions and can be hardening (permanent) or non-hardening.

Fluorescent labels and markers are used widely now and immuno-fluorescence, a method that uses antibodies tagged with labels such as fluorescein, is a well-established technique.

However, a general problem during examining these materials under the microscope is the light used for fluorescence stimulation also degrades the label, causing the fluorescence to fade. This also affects seeing materials that have a low labeling level. This photofading of labels can be slowed using Citifluor mountants.

Antifadent (AF) Solutions

Although antifadent solutions AF-1, AF2, and AF-3 were developed for use with FITC polyclonal antibodies, they are being widely used as they can preserve the signal for other fluorochromes such as rhodamine and DAPI. AF-4 contains the antifadent propyl gallate, which is particularly suited for use with DAPI and Alexa dye-stained materials, as well as FITC-labeled materials.
