2% mol Yttria-Stabilised Zirconia - Outstanding Fracture Toughness

Innovnano’s 2 mol % Yttria-stabilised Zirconia (2YSZ) offers a unique balance of fracture toughness and flexural strength.  At up to 14 MPa.m0.5, the fracture toughness is significantly better than 3YSZ, the current structural ceramic powder of choice.

Usually this lower yttria content would lead to a decrease in the stabilization of the zirconia matrix. However, Innovnano's highly energetic manufacturing process-  Emulsion Detonation Synthesis (EDS)- gives the 2YSZ powder a nanostructure that stabilizes the zirconia and ensures that the components fabricated using this powder are up to the demands of advanced ceramic applications.

The novel 2YSZ can be bought as either a binderless or ready-to-press powder, and is a more-than-viable alternative to traditional micron-sized 3YSZ. It is also possible to use it as the zirconia phase in both alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) and zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA).

Properties and Benefits

2YSZ is of the highest quality and consistency thanks to Innovnano's proprietary EDS technology that gives the powder it's enhanced chemical and physical properties.

As a result, ceramic components fabricated using it exhibit exceptional wear-resistance, high component and flexural strength, and excellent durability- so you can have complete trust in their performance and lifetime.

2YSZ from Innovnano displays superior fracture toughness that puts it a step above other structural ceramic materials, providing outstanding tribological performance, not only for many physically demanding applications but also for cases that necessitate cyclic load resistance. The high component strength and durability is ideal for manufacturing structural ceramics.

Innovnano 2YSZ is an excellent choice for components that undergo cyclic fatigue, such as those used in rotary machinery. Its excellent performance in these tests is due to its ability to absorb energy, made possible due to the high values of fracture toughness it exhibits that are close to those seen in metals and alloys.

Structural ceramics are used in many applications across a wide range of industries, if a component or coating is required with exceptional wear- and friction-resistance. Some specific uses include:

  • Nozzles
  • Valve components
  • Pump linings
  • Cutting tools
  • Grinding materials
  • Tank linings and ceramic sleeves
  • Welding pins
  • Dies and tooling
  • Roller bearings
  • Extruders
