Zetasizer DLS-ELS Instrument Series for Colloid and Nanoparticle Particle Size and Zeta Potential Measurement

Dynamic light scattering is a well-proven method for measuring the sub-micron particle size and size distribution of particles and molecules which are dissolved or dispersed in a liquid. The Brownian motion of these particles causes the intensity of the light that they distribute to fluctuate rapidly.

The examination of these short-term intensity fluctuations produces the speed of the Brownian motion and hence the particle size, using the Stokes-Einstein relationship. DLS is an extremely flexible sizing technique which is accurate, quick, and repeatable. It needs just small volumes of sample for examination and is non-destructive. DLS is material-independent and thus has become a typical analytical technique for particle sizing.

The Zetasizer range instruments are used to measure particle and molecular size from less than a nanometer to several microns using dynamic light scattering; molecular weight using static light scattering; and zeta potential and electrophoretic mobility using electrophoretic light scattering.

The Zetasizer systems come in a number of different models to match the customer’s application needs, such as the new Zetasizer Pro and Ultra. These two new systems provide unparalleled flexibility and ease-of-use, coupled with empowering user guidance, and unique measurement methods such as Adaptive Correlation and Multi-Angle Dynamic Light Scattering (MADLS®).

Adaptive Correlation

Adaptive Correlation (AC) is a new method for capturing and processing DLS data to yield the most dependable correlation function for the correct determination of the diffusion coefficient and particle size. AC, which uses a statistically motivated method to deliver the ideal correlation data, provides more consistent DLS size data, which can decrease the need for filtering, and yields faster and higher precision results. This is only available on Zetasizer Pro and Ultra.

Multi-Angle Dynamic Light Scattering (MADLS®)

Within just three minutes, MADLS® can automatically conduct a complete examination of a sample at numerous light scattering angles, so that each particle is examined robustly without any particle size bias. All data gathered is auto-compiled into a single integrated measurement, providing a detailed and reliable picture of the sample, autonomous of the measurement angle.

The MADLS® helps to resolve size populations that may formerly have been hidden by larger particles, decreasing the need for additional characterization. MADLS® technology is also a calibration-free measurement of particle concentration. This offers an extremely representative picture of the sample, not impacted by angular sensitivity, with an improved capability to resolve individual populations. This is available only on Zetasizer Ultra.

Intelligent Data Quality Advice

This offers the unique capability of using machine learning or a neural network to access acquired data and offers expert advice to the users regarding the integrity of their data.

The system has been taught using large datasets in an administered learning process from archives of earlier sample runs from the Malvern Panalytical data sets. The system uses basic icons to specify data quality results (Good, Suspect, or Poor) and offers users with clean and unmistakable reasons for the data quality and how it can be enhanced.

Zetasizer Ultra

The new Zetasizer Ultra is the most advanced system for the measurement of particle and molecular size, particle concentration, and particle charge, and signifies the highly smart and flexible instruments in the Zetasizer range.

Driven by the new ZS Xplorer software, the Ultra offers analysis speed, ease of use, and data confidence, together with two distinctive measurement features: MADLS® and Particle Concentration, to offer even better insight into the samples.

Zetasizer Pro

The Zetasizer Pro is used for the measurement of particle size, molecular size, electrophoretic mobility, and zeta potential of nanoparticles. It allows size measurements to be carried out up to three times faster when compared to earlier Zetasizer models. The Zetasizer Pro speeds up sample throughput, saving operator and system time for other operations.

Even beginner users will be able to generate the maximum-quality measurements, thanks to the intuitive interface and the deep learning empowered data quality advice system that highlights issues and offers advice on the best way to address each problem.
