Measuring Injection Values in the Automotive Industry

Geometries like the boreholes of, for example, injection valves in the automotive sector could barely be determined optically, until now. Moreover, lateral probing of components having vertical surfaces was restricted to complex special solutions, CT solutions, or tactile measuring systems.

Such changes with an innovative function of the optical coordinate measuring system — µCMM — will be presented at this year’s Control show in Germany, Stuttgart. Now, vertical surfaces of more than 90° can also be determined optically.

Optical Hole Measurement

As stated above, vertical surfaces of over 90° can also be optically measured. The diameter-depth ratio of holes ranges between 1:3 and 1:10, with 0.1 to 2 mm being the quantifiable diameter.

Parameters like inside and outside diameter and opening angle are normally measured by users.

More Measurable Parameters

Reference surfaces, contours, lengths etc.

Apart from holes, dimensional features like reference surfaces, lengths, contours, and so on can thus be optically determined with a high level of precision, in short measurement times, and in high resolution.

Multiple Hole Measurement

with automatic rotation unit “µCMM Real3D”

Combined with an automatic rotation unit “µCMM Real3D” — converting the 3-axis CMM into a 5-axis system — multiple holes including their orientation to one another can be determined. The measurement of injection nozzles including injection angle, side angle, K-factor, and diameter is one application which can be realized using the µCMM in tandem with Real3D.

Vertical Focus Probing

Extension of Focus-Variation technology

“Vertical Focus Probing” is a patent-pending technique for hole measurement and is an extension of the Focus-Variation technology. It is predicated on the use of a partial light cone. The lens capture single diffusely reflected light rays from vertical surfaces. Flanks with more than 90° are traceably determined in high repeatability and high resolution. Vertical flanks determined in this manner can be used, for instance, to fit a workpiece coordinate system.
