Cerium-Doped Lutetium-Based Scintillation Crystal

The Saint-Gobain LYSO (Lu1.8Y.2SiO5:Ce) is a cerium-doped lutetium-based scintillation crystal that exhibits higher density and shorter decay time when compared to many other scintillation materials. As an ideal material for applications that require higher throughput and energy resolution at improved timing rates, the LYSO has demonstrated its proven success for time-of-flight PET applications.

In these PET applications, which have traditionally used arrays of BGO, the LYSO crystal has been shown to surpass this material’s capabilities as a result of its exceptional density, energy resolution, timing and throughput properties.

More recently, Saint-Gobain Crystals has introduced a newly engineered version of LYSO, which offers up to 20% more light yield and 6% greater energy resolution as compared to the traditional LYSO. With a 1/e decay time of 36 nanoseconds, the engineered LYSO crystal exhibits a much shorter decay time as compared to both the BGO and traditional LYSO.

  • Medical – PET applications
  • PET applications have traditionally used arrays of BGO. LYSO crystal competes directly on density and surpasses BGO on energy resolution, timing and throughput.
