Particulate Systems’ SentinelPro is a class-leading dynamic image analyzer designed for applications where particle shape, not just the particle size, may be vital information for forecasting raw material quality and to keep a high level of process control.

Particle morphology offers crucial information about the physical shape properties of a sample. It has been proven that shape can impact flowability, packing density, dispersion, aggregate formation, segregation, and microstructure character.

The fully automated SentinelPro is an ideal research grade instrument or can be used in a full production setting where accuracy, speed, and ease of use with its Pass/Fail shape control limits feature can be used.

Principles of Operation

First the particles are suspended in a flowing stream, backlit by a high speed, Xeon strobe, and then photographed using a high-resolution digital camera at up to 127 frames-per-second. Separate particle images can be viewed directly and captured as a video file for post-operation processing.

The dynamic turbulent flow path offers a 3D, random orientation, direct view of the traveling particles within the sensing zone. When compared to static imaging, dynamic imaging offers better particle detail concerning convexity, symmetry, sphericity, and aspect ratio.

Dynamic Image Analysis

A recirculating liquid system conveys the suspended sample via the analysis cell where a CCD camera captures an image of the particles, transforms the image to a digital format, and transmits the information to the software for final examination in real time.

SentinelPro Standalone Instrument

This model is a completely independent, standalone instrument capable of processing samples for shape analysis by Dynamic imaging. The unit includes an internal peristaltic pumping system with chemically resistant tubing through the fluid path.

Its flexible design enables automatic fluidic cycling, optic conversions for lengthening the particle size range and allows customization for better viscosity samples by the Particulate Systems’ Custom Engineering Department to meet users’ specific requirements.

SentinelPro Shape Module

Capable of fully integrating into the users existing particle sizing workflow without compromise.

The SentlinelPro Shape Module automatically procures an aliquot of sample from the reservoir of the current laser light scattering instrument.

No need to alter or re-verify the user’s currently established technique or process, instead easily incorporate the Shape Module within the fluid path of a current size-only instrumentation.

As the sample is being examined, the SentinelPro taps into the sample reservoir of the user’s sizing instrument, removes an aliquot of no more than 30 ml of the sample, conducts real-time shape examination and returns the sample to the current instrument without damaging the sample or the reliability of the particle sizing instrument.

Thumbnail Extraction from Specific Points in Histogram

The SentinelPro makes use of two vital features: Random orientation and recirculation of the sample. These two features aid in ensuring a real representation of the sample, as well as accurate data.

When seeing particle thumbnails, the left-mouse button will show all the shape measurement values for that particular thumbnail.

The right-mouse button will enable users to remove that particular particle from the database and statistics.

Practical when, for example, a single air bubble is not required in the database.

The Particle Insight provides users with an accurate analysis of each dimension of all the particles. Furthermore, the users can selectively view each particle that formed a specific area of any shape histogram.

Process Monitoring

To streamline manufacturing process control, the Particle Insight includes a process monitoring feature that displays simple pass/fail indicators for any shape measurement. It is no longer essential to regulate an incoming or outgoing process by only particle size. This feature can also be used to categorize particles as needed by industry standards such as ISO 4406 and NAS 1638 for the oil sector, and USP <788> for therapeutics.

Compare Samples with Shape Overlays

The Particle Insight enables sample-to-sample comparisons that can visually reveal the differences in shape features of particles. By overlaying sample histograms for all the available shape factors, the user can compare various samples and make determinations grounded on size as well as on shape.

Scatter Plot Correlates Two Shape Measures

The correlation between any two shape results of the same sample can offer users exclusive information about both their process and their particles. The correlation coefficient calculation can also be used as quality control standards for process control. This Pearson coefficient is extensively used as a measure of the strength of linear reliance between two variables.

Smartphone and Tablet Application for Particle Insight

View and carry out more statistical analysis on the go. A unique feature allowing automatic real-time secure cloud-based data transfer from the Particle Insight directly to the user’s hands. As results are gathered, data is uploaded where approved users can download and not just see results but also carry out statistical analysis.

Data Generated in Either Graphical or Spreadsheet Formats

Statistical information can be illustrated and printed for all shape measures including sieve-correlations and the automatic creation of spreadsheet files allowing users to procure shape information for each particle tested.
