Brookhaven Instruments’ BI-MwA—Chromatography

The Molecular Weight Analyzer (BI-MwA) system from Brookhaven Instruments has a maximum price/performance ratio of any multi-angle laser light scattering detector used for the determination of molecular weight.

The BI-MwA removes SEC/GPC column calibration and enhances data quality. Users can quickly decrease uncertainty without having to make any kind of assumptions and achieve true extrapolation to zero angle.

Simple to Use, Sophisticated Features

Users can inject their samples into the low-volume, 7-angle flow cell. The sample is lighted up by a temperature-stabilized, precision, power-controlled diode laser. The high-sensitivity, ultra-stable, low-noise CCD detector automatically gathers the scattered light. The software then extrapolates the information to a zero angle to determine the absolute molecular weight.

Two Ways to Use the BI-MwA

Users can determine the average molecular weight (batch-mode) or determine the molecular weight distribution (flow mode). Most often, macromolecular samples have a range of molecular weights.

In certain cases, this distribution is very narrow, and in other cases, it is very wide and/or multimodal. Differences in the distribution could denote the presence of aggregation or impurities. But for other applications, the average molecular weight is enough to define the sample.

At times the distribution holds significance, and at times, the entire average is enough. Either way, the BI-MwA is the ideal tool for the task.
