MARWIS is the first mobile road and runway weather sensor that has been developed specifically for the detection of road conditions, friction, temperatures, and other parameters in real-time from driving vehicles.
The mobile road weather sensor referred to as MARWIS turns vehicles into driving weather stations by detecting numerous runway weather and crucial road parameters. It can also be installed on vehicles with a distance of around 1 to 2 m above the surface.
Furthermore, it gives information regarding dew points, water film heights, temperatures, road conditions (wet, dry, ice snow, and moist), ice percentages, friction, and relative humidity ranging up to a frequency of 100 times per second.
MARWIS acts as significant decision support concerning preventive gritting. As a result of the open interface protocols, it can be combined easily into current winter maintenance monitoring networks. Likewise, the mobile road sensor has the potential to communicate directly with the help of a control system on gritting vehicles. The measurement data output supports the protocol UMB binary.
