Multi-Purpose X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) and Computer Tomography (CT) with the PANalytical Empyrean
Aleksandar Stefanovic from PANalytical gives us a tour of the Empyrean, multi-purpose diffractometer. The Empyrean is unique, as it is not just a, x-ray diffractometer (XRD), it can also perform computer tomography (CT).
One of the key features of the Empyrean is the PIXcel 3D detector, which is the only detector that can operate as a point detector, linear detector, 2-D detector and computer tomography.
It can perform all x-ray diffraction modes including small angle scattering, refelction and transmission, as well as being able to analyse all manner of samples from powders to thin films, nanomaterials and even 3-dimensional objects. It can be fully controlled and automated through the software interface and includes data analysis software.
The CT function allows non-destructive examination of 3-dimensional objects that are transparent to x-rays. It can be used to examine such things as the homogeneity of pharmaceuticals, fossils and archeological samples through to catalsyts. An example of a pharmaceutical sample is provided in this video.
