Torion Launches CUSTODION-NT Hand Held Device to Sample Gases and Liquid Vapors

Torion Technologies Inc. introduces the new CUSTODION®-NT, a hand held device to sample gases and liquid vapors, and introduce those samples to an analytical instrument. There is a demonstrated need for air and water monitoring of hazardous compounds in a variety of environments.

The low cost and convenience of NTs allow field analysts to deploy multiple NT samplers simultaneously to get a complete site analysis. When coupled with the TRIDION™-9 person portable GC-MS samples can be analyzed in as little as 3 min onsite.

The CUSTODION-NT is a hand held device with a blunt, hollow needle packed with sorbent materials. The needle is interfaced with a small hand held pump that pulls gas through the packed needle at a determined flow rate. Organic volatile compounds present in gas or water vapors quickly adsorb onto the sorbent material where they are trapped and concentrated. The CUSTODION-NT interfaces directly with the injection port of the TRIDION-9 GC-TMS. Once the needle is inserted into the heated injection port at 270°C the analytes rapidly desorb from the sorbent material. Helium is reverse flushed through the needle, carrying the target compounds from the needle to the GC column.

Sample collection on a CUSTODION-NT is rapid, typically taking 5 minutes sampling time for concentrations at ~10 ppb, or longer for very low sample concentrations. Wide concentration ranges can be accommodated with the NT by adjusting the time and gas flow rate of sampling. CUSTODION-NTs are reusable making the cost per sample analysis extremely low. Because the absorbed analytes are fairly volatile, desorbed at 270°C and swept with helium into the GC column, there is typically no carryover from sample to sample. Adsorption of analytes onto the needle packing is very reproducible, and it is easy to add an internal standard making quantitation of sample concentration easy and reliable.

The CUSTODION-NT and TRIDION-9 GC-TMS are uniquely suited for rapid onsite analysis. The combination of ease of use, low cost of the CUSTODION-NT, and high speed analysis with the TRIDION-9 GC-TMS allow for an unprecedented number of samples to be processed, providing information when and where it is needed to make in-field decisions.
