Torion Technologies Inc. introduces the FUZION™ line of portable, rapid field sampling products to enhance the capabilities of Torion's person portable TRIDION®-9 GC-TMS instruments.
The FUZION-3 product will accommodate up to three different modules including sample desorption (SD), heated headspace (HS), purge and trap (PT) and internal standard (IS) additional modules. The FUZION-3 can be easily configured to meet the user's specific application requirements for sample preparation and analysis at the samples' location.
The FUZION-SD module allows for transfer of air samples collected on conventional-sized collection traps (1/4- inch stainless steel tubes with adsorbents) to micro traps for injection into a micro-bore capillary GC. During this desorption process under gas flow and at temperatures up to 300 °C, the analytes are transferred from the conventional trap (CUSTODION™-CT) to Torion's new needle trap (CUSTODION™-NT) for injection into the TRIDION-9 GC-TMS. A complete module can operate from laboratory supplied gas (helium or nitrogen) and 110V power, or it can operate from battery power and an internal tank of pressurized gas. CUSTODION-NT devices can be used to achieve 10-50 ppb detection limits for many air-borne compounds. If lower detection limits are required, then samples would be collected in conventional traps first then transferred to the CUSTODION-NT and then injected into the GC-MS.
Another important module is the internal standard (IS) addition module. After a sample has been collected on a CUSTODION-NT, either directly or by thermo desorption from a conventional trap, the FUZION-IS module can be used to add internal standard to the needle trap. The IS module contains a CALION™ standard vial that is maintained at a constant temperature (40-80 °C). To add the internal standard, a known volume of the headspace over the vial is passed through the same CUSTODION-NT that was used to collect the sample. Then the sample and internal standard are introduced into the GC-MS for quantitative analysis of sample analytes.
Customers can expect to get about 15 desorptions from conventional traps on a single battery charge and over a hundred desorptions from a single tank of compressed gas, depending on the duration of the desorption and the gas flow rate. The FUZION-3 can be programmed from the front panel or when connected to a PC via CHROMION* software. The FUZION-3 products along with the TRIDION-9 GC-TMS allow air sampling and analysis to be performed in the field without separate compressed gas supplies or an AC power source being available.
