Rugged LED Light Fittings Come in Aluminum Billet Housing Larson Electronics’ added several new LED lights, including the LEDSM-3X60 and the LEDSM-1X60 mounts for flat and tubular mounting of small LED lights. The LEDSM-3X60 LED light consists of three 250 lumen watertight, potted LED lights encased in an machined aluminum billet housing. Bioplastics Conference Sets Record for Attendees The industry conference on bioplastics took place for the fourth time in Berlin on the 10th and 11th of November. Despite the difficult financial situation the event set a new visitor record. 380 visitors and 27 exhibitors attended the conference hosted by the European Bioplastics Association. Experts still expect continued growth in the field of compostable and biobased materials. Full Story |

BASF Offers a New Biodegradable Plastic BASF is now offering a new biodegradable plastic. It goes by the name Ecovio® FS and it has joined the existing Ecovio product line. New Technique for Manufacturing Solar Cells Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have refined a technique to manufacture solar cells by creating tubes of semiconducting material and then "growing" polymers directly inside them. The method has the potential to be significantly cheaper than the process used to make today's commercial solar cells. Full Story |

University of Michigan Researcher Wins BASF Catalysis Award Scientists are not usually known by their nicknames. Melanie Sanford, Professor at the University of Michigan, is an exception to that rule: Her commitment to new catalytic reactions for cleaner systems and greener processes in chemistry and her new approaches to molecule-building through breaking the normally unreactive, very strong carbon–hydrogen (CH) bond has earned the 34 year-old chemist the title “bond-breaker” in the science press.
