Introduction

Aluminum alloys contain strong corrosion resistance. These alloys are good low-temperature alloys. Aluminium / Aluminum alloys are sensitive to high temperatures ranging between 200 and 250°C (392 and 482°F). The strength of these alloys increases when exposed to subzero temperatures and the strength decreases when exposed to high temperatures.

The following datasheet provides an overview of Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy.

Fabrication and Heat Treatment

Annealing

Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy is annealed at 343°C (650°F) only when the need to relieve the cold working stress arises. After being sufficiently heated the alloy is finally cooled in air.

Cold Working

Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy is capable of being cold worked by using conventional methods. This alloy can be cold worked in any of the H-32, H-34, H-111 tempers or in the annealed condition.

Welding

Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy is capable of being welded by all the commercial welding methods.

Forging

Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy can be hot forged.

Forming

Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy can be readily cold worked in the annealed or tempered conditions. This alloy contains good cold working and hot working characteristics.

Machinability

The machinability of Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy is rated from fair to poor. Machining operations for this alloy is recommended when the alloy is in the H-34 temper condition. Oil lubricants can be used in the machining process.

Heat Treatment

Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy cannot be heat treated.

Hot Working

Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy can be hot worked in the temperature range of 371 to 204°C (700 to 400°F).

Hardening

Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy can be hardened only by being cold worked.

Applications

Aluminium / Aluminum 5454 alloy is used in pressure vessels, marine service and welded structures.
