Location: University of Surrey, Guildford, UK
Duration:  5 Days
Start Date:  April 12, 2010
Close Date : April 16, 2010
Description: Cearmics are used in bulk form or as coating materials in a wide variety of applications. The processing, properties and application areas of ceramics and other hard coating materials will be covered.

Course Aims

The Ceramics and Hard Coatings Course aims to:

  • Provide a detailed consideration of the processing and mechanical properties of engineering ceramics and hard coatings
  • Provide an introduction to the allied topics of surafce engineering and tribology

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the Ceramics and Hard Coatings Course and associated assessment package, students will be able to:

  • Describe and select appropriate processing conditions for a range of ceramic and hard coating materials
  • Describe and predict the microstructural features that will result from a particular processing route
  • Understand the relationships between processing, microstructural development and properties in a range of ceramic materials in bulk and coating forms
  • Use statistical methods to predict the strength of a ceramic in a range of loading regimes and environments
  • Predict, qualitatively and semi-quantitatively, the fracture behaviour of a range of ceramic/hard coating microstructures subject to simple mechanical loading, indentation, wear by hard particles and thermal stresses
  • Select appropriate materials for given applications and give the supporting rationale

Course Content

The following topics will be convered in the Ceramics and Hard Coatings Course:

  • Overview of Ceramics and Hard Coatings
    • Ceramics Processing – Powders, Green Bodies, Densification
    • Coating Processes - CVD and PVD
  • Mechanical Properties of Ceramics: Introduction
    • Mechanical Properties of Ceramics: Statistical Nature of Strength
    • Thermomechanical Behaviour
  • Introduction to Tribology
    • Behaviour of ceramics and hrad coatings subjected to indentation and wear processes
  • Principal Materials and their application areas

The lecture content will be reinforced and enhanced through tutorial/demonstration sessions.
