The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) has received an order from the Chinese company, Baoshan Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd. (Baosteel), to supply all the automation and electrical equipment for the second production line of the Shanghai No. 1 stainless steel works. With an order volume of around EUR 19 million, the new stainless steel line is to start operating in September 2005.
Producing around 20 million metric tons per year, Baosteel is China's largest steel manufacturer and the number 5 worldwide. As a net importer of steel and steel products (18 million metric tons per year), China now comes second, directly behind the US. The main demand is for stainless and special steels for aircraft and automobile construction and for the consumer goods industry. At the present time, Baosteel is already erecting a new stainless steel works in Shanghai, which will also be equipped by Siemens with automation and electrical systems. Due to the growing need for high-quality steel products, the company is expanding this plant by adding a further production line with an annual capacity of 720,000 metric tons slabs.
The new line will consist of a scrap yard, a 90 MVA electric arc furnace with a tapping weight of up to 120 metric tons, an argon-oxygen decarbonization (AOD) converter with a capacity of 135 metric tons, a 135 metric ton ladle furnace and a continuous casting plant. For these facilities, Siemens is delivering all the electrical equipment, including instrumentation and drive technology, as well as a dynamic reactive-current compensation system (Static Var Compensation, SVC). The new production line will also be provided with a process control system based on the Simatic PCS7, with integrated technological functions for the continuous casting plant. As a result, the steel works will have the benefits of an all-inclusive automation solution. Siemens is also responsible for the engineering as well as for monitoring the installation work and commissioning.
