Pirelli Patent Self Inflating Tyre System

Improve motorcyclists' safety through technology: that is the objective achieved by the PIRELLI SAFETY WHEEL SYSTEM, a new development patented by Pirelli to reduce risks derived from motorcycle tyre punctures or loss of inflation pressure. The result of close cooperation between Pirelli and Brembo, based in the Bergamo area of Italy and a leader in braking systems and motorcycle components, PIRELLI SAFETY WHEEL SYSTEM will be previewed on the stands of the two companies for members of the industry at the international motorcycle and scooter show Intermot 2004 in Munich from 15-19 September.

Designed by Pirelli, always intent on guaranteeing driving and riding safety through its products, PIRELLI SAFETY WHEEL SYSTEM re-inflates a motorcycle's tyre in the case of either a puncture or a loss of air pressure - under normal conditions, a bike tyre loses an average of 0.2 bar every three months. The PIRELLI SAFETY WHEEL SYSTEM comprises three elements: a special rim with an internal tube containing compressed air; a valve that regulates the passage of pressure between the tube and the tyre; and the Pirelli Bike X-PRESSURE™ system, which monitors the pressure and temperature of tyres.

When the tyre deflates, the valve opens automatically, topping up the original pressure. PIRELLI SAFETY WHEEL SYSTEM is able to compensate for a tyre's spontaneous loss of air for a period of between 9-12 months. As a result of this development, a motorcyclist can ride his bike with complete peace of mind. THE PIRELLI SAFETY WHEEL SYSTEM valve is programmed to remain closed if tyre pressure diminishes due to a drop in temperature, rather than a loss of air.

In the case of a puncture, two things immediately come into play: both the Bike X-PRESSURE™ system, which warns motorcyclists of a pressure loss by means of a visual signal, and the PIRELLI SAFETY WHEEL SYSTEM valve, which guarantees the passage of air into the tyre, compensating for the loss of air. The rider has, therefore, the time and space necessary to stop his bike in conditions of safety.
