SMS Demag to Supply Masteel with Hot Strip Mill

Maanshan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (Masteel) in the southern Anhui province, PR of China, placed an order in January with SMS Demag for the supply of a new hot strip mill. The order was placed only six months after the successful acceptance of the CSP® facility supplied by SMS Demag.

The new hot rolling mill is designed for rolling widths of up to 2130 mm and an annual production of 5.5 million tones.

As the leader of a consortium, SMS Demag is supplying the entire mechanical equipment and a portion of the automation system. This supply comprises a slab sizing press, two four-high reversing stands, a finishing mill with seven stands and three coilers, and the PCFC automation (profile, contour and flatness computer). The plant will be prepared for the retrofitting of a coil box. The product range extends from mild deep-drawing grades to high-strength structural steels and onwards to pipe grades and multiphase steels.

In China, SMS Demag has been awarded the majority of the steel hot strip mills put out to international tender during the last few years. All of the orders have been distinguished by the high demands on quality in combination with the large width of the hot strip produced.

The equipment and systems that have undergone consistent further development at SMS Demag, such as CVCPlus, Camber Free Rolling and similar, ensure that these quality demands are reliably satisfied.

The hot strip mill is the core element of a completely new steelworks that is at present taking shape in the north of Maanshan. Commissioning is scheduled for spring 2007.
