Sasol to Increase Isopropanol and Methyl Ketone Production by 20ktpa

Due to strong demand and product shortages at the end of 2004, Sasol has decided to increase Isopropanol (IPA) and Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) capacities at its German solvents plants by 20 000 metric tonnes a year (mt/a). These products are used as solvents in wide variety of applications such as inks, paints and coatings.

This is a low cost incremental debottlenecking process to maximise Sasol's current infrastructure and equipment.

Sasol chief executive Pieter Cox says: "Present market conditions provide Sasol with an ideal opportunity to make incremental capacity expansions viable".

Sasol is also converting a mothballed 60.000 mt/a ethanol distillation plant in Herne, Germany for the upgrading of bio-ethanol to fuel grade ethanol.
