In September 2004 Mitsui Mining Company of Tokyo commissioned Uhde GmbH of Dortmund, Germany, and the Japanese company Otto Corporation of Tokyo to build a new coke oven battery. The new coke oven battery, which will be located in Kitakyushu, some 800 km west of Tokyo, will consist of 46 ovens with a total capacity of 570,000 t/year of coke and is due to come on stream in the first half of 2006. The contract is for a `pad-up rebuild`, which involves replacing the complete coke oven battery from the concrete foundation up.

Uhde has also won a contract from China Steel Corporation in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, for the major repair of two coke oven batteries comprising in total 78 ovens. The contract involves the hot repair of all ovens on the pusher and coke sides. The fronts of the coke oven batteries and large sections of the heating walls as well as the complete oven top will be replaced. In all, some 7,000 tonnes of refractory material and around 2,000 tonnes of steel and cast parts will be used in the repair. The work is due to begin in early 2006 and will take 24 months to complete.

The third contract is for the expansion of an existing coke plant by 10 new ovens with an additional capacity of 105,000 t/year of coke. It has been awarded by SIDERAR S.A. of Argentina. The plant is to be built in San Nicolas, around 220 km north-west of the capital Buenos Aires. Production of the first coke is planned for late August 2006.

The scope of Uhde`s services for the three contracts includes the basic and detail engineering and supply of special equipment as well as supervision of the erection and commissioning activities. The contracts are worth approximately 44 million euros in total for Uhde GmbH.
