Momentive Receives Recognition for StatSil Antimicrobial Elastomer

Momentive Performance Materials announced today that it has received the 2009 Frost & Sullivan Product Innovation of the Year Award for StatSil antimicrobial elastomer platform technology in the North American antimicrobial materials market.

This prestigious award is presented each year to the company that has demonstrated excellence in new products and technologies within its industry and shown innovation by launching a broad line of emerging products and technologies.

The Product Innovation of the Year Award recognizes Momentive for its StatSil antimicrobial elastomer that can help address a key challenge in the healthcare industry – preventing the transmission of microbial infections in the hospital. One of the main causes for such infections is the growth of microbes on medical devices. The StatSil antimicrobial elastomers can help reduce microbe growth in or on the human body due to the use of medical devices.

“The Frost & Sullivan award is timely and very much appreciated, as this year marks 70 years of innovation at Momentive,” said Lynn Colucci-Mizenko, global marketing director, Momentive. “We are proud of our ability to develop cutting edge solutions in areas of importance to our customers, delivering platform technologies that open up a new world of possibilities and opportunities. Our StatSil technology is a winning example of what can be achieved when we collaborate with our customers to overcome challenges in the marketplace.”

“The StatSil platform is the preferred antimicrobial silicone elastomer technology in the North American market,” said Anirudh Menon, research analyst, Frost & Sullivan. “A key factor in its acceptance in the marketplace is the research activities, which Momentive carried out, to understand the needs of end users in the silicone medical device market. Once major issues were identified, Momentive leveraged its rich tradition in healthcare and highly experienced R&D team to develop a unique solution.”

Momentive’s custom elastomer platform technology is based on the direct incorporation of a silver-based antimicrobial additive into the base silicone elastomer. According to Frost & Sullivan, one of the chief advantages of the StatSil technology is its design flexibility. Based on specific applications such as catheters or intravenous components, the StatSil elastomers can be custom formulated to meet specific performance and processing requirements.
