The highly-engineered, automated technology will enable the safe removal and treatment of radioactive fuel, and its transportation to a new, modern storage facility at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories site in Ontario, the base for Canada's nuclear research facility for nearly 100 years.

During a handover event at the Rolls-Royce nuclear manufacturing facility in Peterborough, Ontario, Dr Neil Alexander, Rolls-Royce, General Manager Civil Nuclear - Canada said:"Rolls-Royce has a nuclear engineering pedigree stretching back well over half a century. We have designed, developed and manufactured a number of mechanical handling systems to address customers' individual and unique challenges."

"Such highly-specialized activity has created an industry-leading knowledge and expertise base in Eastern Ontario. This expertise, combined with that of our highly-skilled supply chain, generates significant economic benefits for the region along with high quality career opportunities" he added.

AECL President, Bob Walker said: "All of us at AECL are proud to work in collaboration with companies like Rolls-Royce and its many supply chain partners. Their work in designing and manufacturing sophisticated, automated systems for AECL and the rest of the Canadian nuclear industry is testament to Rolls-Royce and the high quality supply chain we have here in Ontario to support our work."

The Organization of CANDU Industries President Dr Ron Oberth said: "Canada has a fully mobilized and efficient supply chain that has grown and thrived over the past 30 years of continuous work supporting the nuclear industry in Canada and abroad. OCI's member companies have earned an impeccable reputation for utilising the highest levels of skills and expertise to ensure they meet the demanding standards of the nuclear industry in the safest and most environmentally responsible manner."

Rolls-Royce has a significant nuclear skills base, with a large existing nuclear certified supply chain, and supports a number of key phases of the nuclear program, including providing advice to governments and operators, supply chain management expertise, as well as manufacturing and technical engineering support.
