Trailer Telematics

This webinar on smart trailers discusses how the trailer is the poor relation in any fleet.

Despite there being more than 10 million trailers in Europe alone, only 8% have any form of telematics, and even fewer have a form of TPMS. Yet 70% of tire breakdowns occur in trailers.

When a trailer is uncoupled and unpowered for a substantial period, it is clear that a fresh approach is necessary for both the maintenance and monitoring of trailers.

Checking the cold tire pressure is critical for the maintenance of the efficiency and safety of a commercial vehicle’s tires. A tire is in its natural state when it is cold, and any pressure measurement at this time will provide an accurate reading of the tire’s pressure.

However, when a tire is warm or hot, its pressure may rise because of air expansion caused by heat. As a result, a pressure measurement taken when the tire is warm or hot will be inaccurate, resulting in underinflation, overinflation, or even tire failure.

Improved safety: Correctly inflated tires supply better handling, traction, and braking performance, which improves safety on the road. Underinflated or overinflated tires can impact the stability of a vehicle, increase the risk of hydroplaning, and cause punctures or blowouts.

Longer tire life: Correctly inflated tires wear evenly and last longer than those that are overinflated or underinflated. Additionally, correct tire pressure lessens the risk of tread separation, sidewall damage, and other tire-related problems that can reduce the lifespan of a tire.

Better fuel efficiency: Underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption by as much as 3%. By keeping tires properly inflated, the vehicle’s fuel efficiency can be improved, resulting in reduced carbon emissions and lower fuel costs.

Employing the advanced ATLAS Smart Trailer Solution can further enhance tire maintenance and monitoring. The ATLAS system delivers continuous real-time data on the tire conditions of the vehicle and the trailer, even when the trailer is uncoupled and unpowered.

This data enables fleet operators to quickly identify and address tire-related issues, decreasing downtime and maintenance costs.

The ATLAS Smart Trailer Solution can assist fleet mechanical and tire service providers with a precise maintenance schedule by supplying real-time data regarding the condition of the trailer, vehicle, and both their tires.

The solution involves sensors for pressure and temperature monitoring of the tires, in addition to the trailer’s rims, load, and location.

This data enables fleet managers to receive alerts when a tire requires maintenance, e.g., when the temperature or pressure is outside of the advised range.

They can subsequently schedule maintenance at a convenient time, such as when the trailer is not being used, to reduce downtime and avoid expensive breakdowns on the journey.

Employing the ATLAS Smart Trailer Solution allows fleet managers to ensure that maintenance is conducted on a regular basis instead of only acting when a tire fails. This helps to extend the lifespan of the tire as well as prevent costly emergency repairs.

This solution can also reduce the amount of time spent waiting for tires to cool down before maintenance can be conducted.

By supplying real-time data regarding the tire temperature, fleet managers can schedule maintenance as soon as the tires are adequately cooled instead of waiting for an extended period.

The smart trailer webinar demonstrates how ATLAS Smart Trailer Solution is compatible with any vehicle, trailer, and tire. This is the ideal solution for fleet mechanical and tire service providers, as it offers a means to enhance maintenance scheduling and decrease downtime, resulting in substantial cost savings and improved operational efficiency.
