Indentation University Session 10: How to Verify a Nanoindenter

In Session 10 of the KLA Instruments Indentation University series, the process of verifying nanoindenter performance is discussed and demonstrated. Regular performance verification is essential for maintaining high data quality and meaningful results.

Session 10 explains the nanoindenter verification procedure that is used to quickly and thoroughly check instrument functionality prior to nanoindentation testing, including operational checks of the calibrations, positioning system, indenter tip shape and area function, and frame stiffness. The example verification is done on the Nano Indenter® G200X with the InForce 50 actuator. Note that this process holds for any KLA Instruments™ nanoindenter actuator for any KLA Instruments nanoindentation system.

About the Speaker

Jennifer Hay

Senior Applications Scientist, KLA Instruments 

Jennifer Hay is a Senior Applications Engineer for KLA Instruments, specializing in nanoindentation. Prior to joining KLA, she held similar positions at Nanomechanics, Keysight, Agilent, and MTS Systems Corporation.  Jennifer has worked in the field of nanoindentation since 1996, advancing standardization while also developing methodology for new applications including thin films, polymers, gels, and biomaterials. Mrs. Hay served as the chair for the MEMS/Nanomechanics technical division of the Society of Experimental Mechanics (SEM), and she has authored many journal articles on nanoindentation, including an invited feature series in the SEM journal Experimental Techniques.
